THE CITY OF READING:  ABSURDISTAN OR BANANA REPUBLIC?  SHOULD WE CALL THE CITY OF READING "BANANASTAN"?

ABSURDISTAN BANANA REPUBLIC
  • Theater of the absurd.

  • Residents are perpetrators, victims or silent bystanders

  • The economy is depressed.

  • The people are depressed.

  • There's much alcoholism or drug use to run away from problems

  • Corruption is the norm.

  • Businesses are at risk to the whims of the ruling class (Grand Poo Ba Junta and Junta Jrs.)

  •  The assistants of the ruling class act with impunity

  • Partnership between government and media

  • There are several basic groups of people:

  • One group that doesn't care about the rules and go about their business

  • Second group that cares about the rules and get's smacked when trying to follow them

  • Third group realizes that it's best to follow the rules, but it's impossible to do so, but they try anyway, and then they get smacked.

Those who attempt to effect change are punished, ridiculed, belittled and criticized.

The normal way of running the local government is crazy, insane, ridiculous, and idiotic.

People cannot make sense out of nonsense, and don't care.

  • The leader (Mayor) is an unaccountable chief executive who ignores the rule of law when it suits his purpose.

  • The Banana Republic is constantly bankrupt and needs ongoing bailouts.

  • Accountability is avoided.

  • Business is done in secret.

  • Underlings are mini-juntas who act the same as the Grand Poo Ba Junta

  • The majority of residents are unmotivated, disengaged, disinterested, uneducated, poorly paid working class of peons, or on welfare.

  • Corruption is tolerated.

  • The media engages in its own betrayal through silence.

  • The Junta believes that laws may be ignored or broken to save the administration.

  • Elections are suspect at best.

  • The administration serves a small, wealthy and corrupt clique.

  • Schools are poor.

  • The economy is backward.  The largest employers are the local prison, the local government, and other public institutions.

  • Lawlessness of the Junta is the norm.  Everyone else suffers at the hands of the Junta's rules, which are constantly changing.

  • Personal loyalty is more important that the rule of law.

  • Residents are expected to pay the bill for the legal exploits of the Junta.  The Junta loses and the residents pay the bill.  The residents do nothing.  They are too apathetic or uneducated to do anything about the problem.
